But really… what is Strong Authentication?

Authentication is the process of determining whether someone or something is, in fact, who or what it is declared to be. Therefore, the term stands for the verification of the identity of a person or entity. Strong Authentication, also known as two-factor authentication (2FA), is a particular authentication process which combines at least two authentication factors of ditinct types in order to enhance the security of the identity verification. Beware, if you access a website with username and password only, you are not using strong authentication: the username is your identity, and the password your sole authentication factor (something you know).

So exactly… why do I need Strong Authentication?

Passwords are intuitive and therefore easy for the user, but this characteristic is also what makes them quite unsafe. They are prone to weak spots and external attacks such as impersonation, borrowing, guessing, observing, snooping, dictionary attacks. Strong authentication can drastically reduce the incidence of online identity theft, phishing expeditions, and other online fraud: stealing the victim's password is not enough to give a thief access to their information. Implementing two authentication factors instead of one provides an advanced level of authentication assurance.
